The effect of mesogenic structure on actuation-performance of nematic main-chain liquid-crystalline elastomers
Nematic liquid-crystalline elastomers(LCEs)are fascinating materials that combine the rubber elasticity of a common elastomer with the anisotropy of the liquid-crystalline state of order, the conjunction of which enables large and equilibrium reversible anisotropic dimensional change of LCEs in response to applied stimuli, and hence enable them to be potential in many applications, such as smart actuators, sensors, artificial organs, smart surfaces, functional microstructures and microrobots, etc.
