Experimental study on vibration mitigation of a full-scale stay cable using a passive electromagnetic inertial mass damper
Bridge stay cables are vulnerable to excessive vibration problems induced by wind,rain-wind or traffic loads because of its ultra-low inherent damping and high flexibility. An electromagnetic inertial mass damper(EIMD)consisting of an inerter element and an electromagnetic damping element is a novel type of passive damper. This paper presents an experimental study on the control performance of a 135 m full-scale stay cable with a passive EIMD located near its anchorage.A series of free vibration tests have been conducted on the cable-EIMD system. The typical acceleration and displacement responses of the stay cable-EIMD system are compared for validating its vibration mitigation performance. The results demonstrate EIMD achieves the superior control performance compared to a viscous damper.
