Rheology in Continuous Manufacturing of Future Pharmaceuticals:Understanding the Interactions and Flow Behavior of Drug-Polymer Mixtures in Hot Melt Extrusion and Fused Deposition Modeling
Rheology is a study of flow and deformation of matter, especially of fluids that have complex,non-Newtonian flow behavior.Such flow is encountered in manufacturing of dosage forms from mixtures of drug(s) and thermoplastic polymer excipients, using methods based on melt processing, such as hot-melt extrusion (HME) and three dimensional (3D) printing by fused deposition modeling (FDM) principle. This work shows some examples of utilizing rheological methods in characterization of drug-polymer mixtures and in evaluation of suitable process in conditions in HME and FDM.
