Influence of solvent composition on the electrospinning process of PLGA
The purpose of the study is to investigate the electrospinnabiliy of PLGA (RG504H) as a function of the ratio of poor solvent : good solvent that used to dissolve RG504H.Dimethylformamide (DMF) and Tetrahydrofuran (THF) were used as a poor solvent and a good solvent, respectively for RG504H.The morphology of electrospun fibers of RG504H from DMF:THF solutions were characterized using a scanning electronic microscopy (SEM).The viscoelastic properties of the starting RG504H solutions (dissolved in a mixture of DMF and THF)were measured using a rheometer. The results showed that RG504H could only be electrospun when it was dissolved in DMF and THF mixed at certain ratios. The diameters of the electrospun fibers increased with an increase in the ratio of THF in the solution. It may be attributed to the increase in viscosity of RG504H solution with an increase in THF, which was evidenced by the rheological characterization.
