Monodisperse Microfluidic Jet Spray Drying: A rapid, versatile and facile technique to produce uniform pharmaceutical microparticles

Recent advances utilizing Monodisperse Microfluidic Jet Spray Drying (MFJSD) to produce uniform microparticles for pharmaceutical applications are reviewed.By controlling the precursor composition, the technique is capable of producing core-shell structured microparticles from initially homogeneous precursor solution in a single drying step.EGCG microparticles produced with MFJSD showed similar antioxidant activity to untreated EGCG.The technique can be further extended to spray freezing-drying for producing microparticles containing PLGA-lipid-PEG nanoparticles for oral delivery of insulin. These studies demonstrate the capability of MFJSD in fabricating uniform, bioactive and complex microparticles from a wide spectrum of precursor materials, making it a powerful approach in pharmaceutical studies at both lab and pilot scales.
