Instructional Design for Collaborative Online International Learning using ZOOM and Smartphones:A case of an invited speaker from overseas

  This study explores an effective instructional design for Collaborative Online International Learning(COIL)with which every teacher can implement when he/she wishes.COIL has high potential to enhance students awareness of English as a Lingua Franca,and deepen their learning about the specific subject matter through presentation and discussion in English with students and a teacher from overseas.This study was conducted in May 2019 in a media class at a Japanese university in Tokyo.To lower the restrictions from the cost and the formal learning environment,this study integrated ZOOM,free remote conferencing service using cloud computing,and smartphones,instead of school-owned desktop computers.In this way,this study stepped forward to lower the restrictions from the cost and schools educational environment.A media specialist in Open education was invited to give an online talk and interacted with the Japanese students for about one hour.After this,the class discussed online interactions learner-content,learner-learner,learner-teacher,learner-device,and learner-culture interaction.As a result,it is found that COIL is an effective instructional design to enhance students understanding in a specific field and to enhance their motivation for learning as well as awareness of English as a Lingua Franca.
