What is Distance Non-Formal Education in Society 5.0?:A Case Study of a Remote Island Tutoring System
Educational resources in remote areas are often insufficient. The application of ICT in education has greatly improved the efficiency of the use of educational resources. With respect to current development,in the upcoming Society 5.0, at least on the technical level, distance education can be implemented in non-formal as well as formal education. The cultural conflict between teachers and students in distance education has a certain impact on the learning effect. This study focuses on the case of a remote Japanese island that introduced public tutoring after formal classes at a public junior high school. This public tutoring school has recently started an online tutoring system that connects them to teachers in central Japan. This program made a significant change in learners knowledge and attitudes toward learning. The remoteness of the island reflected a cultural divide between Tokyo and the island that first prevented effective learning,as in other cases of formal distance education. However,a sympathetic one-on-one process of teacher-learner communication caused a change in students attitudes and tutors way of talking, suggesting that sophisticated technology with sympathetic personal help works effectively, and there are many possibilities to realize this combination in non-formal education to support individual learning.
