Reflection on Learning Experiences with 360-degree Videos
We are pursuing effective use of 360-degree videos in experiential learning. When we experience 360-degree video by a head mounted display(HMD),we can feel high sense of immersion as if we were in that place. We have recorded many videos in students fieldworks, and made our students view such videos to consider possible effects caused by 360-degree videos. The students who conducted fieldworks reflected on their experience.Through such preliminary experiments,we observed possible effects that can be obtained by 360-degree experience, including helping students detect what they missed while on site, and maintaining students excitement and motivation after returning.Although we found such possible effects for students learning, these effects are not conclusive.Besides,we have many challenges to overcome to use 360-degree practically. We need to identify what kind of scenes should be recorded from which viewpoints, and how we should make students reflect on their experience with 360-degree videos. It will also be important to gather more data about how to use such emerging media and how to appropriately combine it with traditional media to enrich students experiences. We would like to critically consider such issues based on results of preliminary experiments with theories about reflection. Then,we would also like to pursue appropriate instructional design for record and use of 360-degree videos for students to learn more from experiential learning.
