What students discussed about Sustainability in the Knowledge Building Class
In order to empower the 21st century learners, schools and education practitioners need to go beyond the traditional knowledge acquisition to support learners to work as communities and advance their community knowledge collectively.Knowledge Building,an idea-centered,principle-based,technologysupported pedagogy, aims to prepare students as epistemic agents through engaging in socio-cognitive interactions. In the knowledge-building community, learners make collective and cognitive efforts to sustained inquiry and advance their community while teachers work as facilitators that provide students with scaffolds. While there is increased research interest, more research is needed on how knowledge building can work in regular classrooms and how the discussion will go when the teacher fades out.In this study,we designed and implemented a knowledge building environment in a year 7 science class, with the support of Knowledge Forum(KF),to facilitate students understanding of Sustainability. This study aims to 1)investigate students conceptual understanding before and after the intervention.2)explore the key concepts discussed in the Knowledge Forum.3)investigate how students understanding of knowledge building and sustainability developed over time.Pre-post tests were conducted to get students domain understanding.Students participation in Knowledge Form and their learning reflections were also collected and analyzed.Findings suggested that students had significant changes in domain understandings. Keywords such as energy, pollution, global warming, renewable energy discussed were identified and how these concepts developed in their discussion were also tracked and reported.
