Comparative Studies of English Textbooks for Junior High School Students in China,Japan and South Korea~How Active Learning is Achieved~

  The purpose of this research is to compare junior high school English language textbooks of Japan,China and South Korea,focusing on how intercultural understanding and active learning are achieved in the textbooks.To figure out the difference between Chinas and Japans English textbooks used by junior high school students,we compared the textbooks(Lin,Araki & Sakurai 2019).Results indicated that the degree of difficulty of the textbooks used by Chinas junior high school students is higher compared to the one used in Japan.Also,our study examined that the four skills of Chinese textbooks,has been paid much attention compared to Japanese textbooks.(The four skills are LISTENING,SPEAKING,READING,and WRITING.)On the contrary,it showed that the themes of Japanese textbooks were much varied,including active learning contents related to intercultural understanding and the spreading of Japanese culture than the Chinese counterpart.It remains to be elucidated how active learning could be utilized through collaborative learning,discussion or group works in English education,which could promote students desire for study and improve their vision about the world.As for this research,we aim to examine the South Korean textbooks based on the study we have done abovementioned in order to better understand the distinguishing features of each countrys textbooks and fine more insights for English education from Asian perspectives.
