Review of Avatars Design Factors:Facial Expression and Gesture
The purpose of this study is to review the facial expressions and gestures of avatars in computer-based simulations. In the simulations, avatars perform indispensable roles that guide and help the learner learn effectively. In computerbased simulations, the design components of avatars such as voice, gestures, facial expressions, appearance, learning contexts are mainly considered because these components influence the learners perceptions.Hence,it is necessary to consider the design factors of avatars so as to maximize the effectiveness of simulations. The facial expressions and gestures are the main interest of the study.Several implications were reported.Expressed emotion, emotion intensity,presence/absence of expression, type of gestures, expression method of feeling, agents and users gender, type of agent and users age intervened in the design of avatars facial expression. For avatars gestures,presence/absence of gesture, types of gestures,presence/absence of attention guiding, agents and users gender, users age and presence/absence of PA were found.
