The History, Facilities and Activities of the Hungarian Natural History Museum
The Hungarian Natural History Museum (HNHM) is one of the first natural history museums in the world, founded in 1802.With its two affiliated countryside museums it is one of the largest scientific and cultural institutions in Hungary, employing more than 230 staff members. It houses extensive botanical, zoological, anthropological, paleontological and geological collections of more than ten million specimens and over 65,000 primary types, whereas its library contains 400,000 volumes of books and periodicals. The collections uniquely represent the natural history of Hungary and the Carpathians, but highly valuable items originate also from other parts of the Earth. The collections and other scientific facilities of HNHM are used annually by approx.350 researchers from all over the world.Research activities cover the fields of taxonomy, systematics, ecology, evolutionary biology, epidemiology, conservation biology, geology, paleontology and physical anthropology. The museums exhibitions attract approximately 300,000 visitors (about 3% of the whole population of the country)annually. The HNHM is successfully participating in several European Union projects, including database management, digitization programs, Research Infrastructure Actions, exchange of scientists, and LIFE+ conservation biology projects. It is a member of the Consortium of European Taxonomic Facilities (CETAF), the International Council of Museums (ICOM), The European Network of Science Centres and Museums (ECSITE) and the Global Genome Biodiversity Network (GGBN).
