Art Culture Nature: Royal Ontario Museum

Royal Ontario Museum is Canadas largest museum that incorporates both natural history and world cultures. The ROM has over 12.5 million specimens and artifacts in its collections with a strong emphasis on Canadian material, but also a broad international scope of research. The Ontario Provincial Governments Royal Ontario Museum Act of 1912 established in Toronto 5 different museums with separate directors for Archaeology, Geology, Mineralogy, Palaeontology, and Zoology. Each of these museums had distinctive origins, but all had early connections with the University of Toronto. The original museum building opened in 1914 along the Universitys Philosophers Walk near the Provincial Legislative Assembly. In 1955, the ROM was unified under one director and now has 23 major collections and research foci in natural sciences, archaeology, and arts.Last year, the museum had its highest attendance record of more than 1.3 million visitors, which was the most for any cultural or scientific institution in the country.Collection and research strengths are traditionally centered on Ontario and Canada, but antiquities were also originally prominent and in the late 1950s there was a further emphasis to broaden the scope to throughout the world. The public space at the ROM includes 27 permanent galleries of world cultures and natural history, 2 hands-on discovery galleries for children, and 4 major display areas for temporary exhibitions. There is an initiative to develop in-house exhibits to tour at other venues in Canada and abroad.A recent example is Out of the Depths: The Blue Whale Story, based on two whales that washed ashore in New foundland. The ROM salvaged both skeletons and plastinated one heart for display in a major exhibit to celebrate Canadas 150th anniversary since confederation, which will now travel across the country and overseas in the coming years.
