The Schistosomiasis Epidemic and Environmental Change: A Case Study of Yuanjiang County, Hunan, in the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries

  The Dongting Lake Region has been identified as the most severe schistosomiasis epidemic region along the Yangtze River since the 1950s when the schistosomiasis prevention and control movement started.The severity embodies in the widest epidemic area, the largest number of people at risk, and the most remarkable natural transmission cycle involving snails as the intermediate host.This article focuses on the relationship between historical environmental transformation and Schistosomiasis epidemic in the Southern Dongting Lake region by casting analytic light on snail as a principal agent.The results show that lineage population process extracted from genealogies were synchronized with how the environment changed and became favorable or unfavorable for snails reproduction both naturally and artificially.
