Analysis of Space-time Characteristics of Spread and Cultivation of Maize in the Ming and Qing Dynasties and the Republic of China Based on Local Gazetteers
Statistics was adopted to analyze historical records from local gazetteers about maize from 1551 to 1949.Thus the space-time characteristics of introduction, spread and cultivation of maize in different provinces could be revealed.The spread of maize in China can be roughly divided into three stages, namely introduction, spread and boom.Maize was introduced and accepted gradually form the Ming Dynasty to the middle Qing Dynasty.Maize spread rapidly from the Qianlong to the Jiaqing Period of the Qing Dynasty.Maize was planted nationwide from late Qing Dynasty to the end of the Republic of China and played an important role in agricultural production.In terms of space distribution, maize belt across Shanxi, Hubei, Sichuan, Hunan,Guizhou and Guangxi in East China was formed during the Jiaqing and Daoguang Period.Meanwhile, scattered planting areas also developed gradually.Maize producing areas in North and Northeast China appeared from late Qing Dynasty to the Republic.The distribution of maize in the Qing Dynasty is similar to that of todays China.Time characteristics can be explained by food shortage and refugees caused by population increase and space characteristics can be explained by geographic location and regional planting conditions.
