Some Fundamental Problems for Understanding Concrete Creep
Concrete creep has been studied more than one hundred years, and the mechanism of it is still unclear. There are still some foundamental problems that need to be studied in depth.Through the observations of the creep behavior in the early stage of loading, and the deformation and mechanical properties of concrete after unloading, the understanding of concrete creep and its effects may be deepened.Firstly, the definition of concrete creep should be reviewed, which is traditionally defined as the deformation of concrete under constant or sustained load.Through the observation of defromation during the loading and unloading process, we found that the concrete specimen exhibits creep even withnot load duration (i.e.loading phase), which provides a new perspective on the definition of concrete creep. The second part is about the short-term creep of concrete.During the past decades, researchers focused mainly on the creep of long load duration time and even more than 360 days, and few research has been done on the concrete creep at the initial loading stage. However, the short-term creep can better reflect the time-varying properties of concrete and correct current models of concrete creep. In addition, the deformation behavior after unloading is also important for understanding of concrete creep.Hence, the third part is about creep recovery of concrete, which is of importance in elucidating the deformation composition of concrete during loading phase and in predicting the actual behavior of concrete structures with unloading. However, existing research is not enough to describe the creep recovery behavior of concrete. The fourth part is about concrete performance after creep.Concrete creep has siginificant influence on the mechanical performance of concrete materials and the long-term behaviour of concrete structures. The creep of concrete is not only referring to deformation, but also the change of the elastic modulus and stregthen of concrete, the creep analysis of a concrete structure should not be based on its initial configuration of the structure and mechanical properites of concrete, after-creep behaviors of the structure are even important issues needed to be investigated.
