Properties of mortars containing expanded perlite and vermiculite aggregates
In this paper, several properties of cement mortar mixed with lightweight expanded perlite and vermiculite aggregates were compared with conventional cement mortar.Normal fine aggregate was partially replaced with different content of expanded perlite (30% by volume) and vermiculite (15% by volume) aggregates to produce mortar with similar density.Although compressive strength was reduced in the presence of the lightweight aggregates, the mortar containing expanded perlite had superior compressive strength than the mortar with vermiculite.Similarly, though water absorption was increased in the presence of the lightweight aggregates, lower water absorption was found in the case of mortar admixed with the expanded perlite aggregate compared to the corresponding mortar with vermiculite aggregate. However, in terms of the residual compressive strength of mortar upon exposure to elevated temperature, the mortar containing vermiculite exhibited the best performance in terms of retaining the strength.Hence, it could be said that for the hardened properties of mortar, the use of expanded perlite was better compared to vermiculite, whereas the use of vermiculite aggregate exhibits good potential to improve the fire-resistive performance of cement mortar.
