Mechanical Properties of Various Fiber Reinforced Concrete
Fiber reinforced concrete (FRC) has been widely used due to its strengthening effects on common concrete. This study aims to investigating the mechanical properties of 5 different types of FRC consisting of steel, carbon, polypropylene, basalt and basalt-polypropylene fibers.Specimen experiments were carried out to measure the compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and elastic modulus of FRC.Meanwhile, mechanical properties of basalt fiber reinforced concrete with the volume fractions of 0.05%, 0.1%, 0.2% were further evaluated. The results indicated that the cubic compression strength of concrete respectively containing steel and carbon fibers increased slightly whereas there was a decrease of axial compression strength for the all types of FRC.It was observed from the test results that use of fiber had little effect on elastic modulus of concrete and the addition of 5 types of fibers enhanced the splitting tensile strength of concrete. Moreover, the results showed that the addition of 0.05%~0.2% basalt fibers improved the splitting tensile strength of concrete while cubic and axial compression strength decreased. It was noted that elastic modulus of basalt fiber reinforced concrete at different volume fractions had negligible changes compared to the plain concrete.
