Durability of Air-purifying Architectural Mortars Prepared with Recycled Glass and Tio2
In this paper, the combined use of recycled glass as a fine aggregate and TiO2 nano-particles as an added catalyst was evaluated as a strategy to enhance the air-purifying potential of architectural mortars.Furthermore, the effect of using recycled glass and TiO2 on the durability properties of architectural mortars was investigated. The results showed that the air-purifying potential of architectural mortar samples increased by increasing recycled glass and TiO2 contents.Nitric oxide removal rates of up to 80% higher (9 and 7 mg·m-2·h-1) than those reported previously for similar materials were achieved. But due to the agglomerate formation, increasing TiO2 and recycled glass contents impaired the durability properties of the samples.Carbonation of the architectural mortar exerted an adverse effect on the NOx removal rate.Approximately 30% of reduction in NOx removal rate was observed after carbonation of the samples, which might be due to the formation of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) crystals in the pores, unfavorably reducing the access of gaseous NOx and light to the sample surface.
