Use of Silica Fume in Sprayed Concrete Applications
Sprayed concrete is a valuable material used in a wide range of infrastructure and applications, including hydroelectric power, mining and railway.Silica fume is a pozzolanic material with a long history of use as a component in sprayed concrete mixtures. This paper presents a review of state-of-the-art projects and reveals how silica fume is today being used as a solution to address various issues including rheology and rebound of sprayed concrete. For example, the Crossrail tunneling project in London, U.K, is using sprayed concrete lining (SCL) technique.Crossrail is currently Europes largest underground construction project;it involves constructing a new 118km railway line traversing east to west across the urban London conurbation.Silica fume and steel fibres are being used extensively in the sprayed concrete, providing a solution to various issues including concrete strength, permeability and sustainability. For Crossrail, the location of the underground stations in dense urban areas of central London has required innovative solutions to handle the sprayed concrete mixture at the construction site.
