Regional Context Indicators for the Evaluation of Concrete Sustainability: an Analysis at the Prefectural Level in Japan

Sustainable development is commonly visualized as the three pillars of sustainability: the environment, economy, and society. However, means for pursuing sustainable development must be considered in the context of the differences that arise between different countries or regions. The sustainability of concrete also depends on regional context, as its usage is affected by a variety of factors, including institutional systems, resource availability and recycling, geography and climate, technology level, stakeholder roles and relations, and socio-economic conditions. While the regional context of concrete sustainability has been explored qualitatively, it is necessary to establish quantitative indicators that can reflect regional differences when evaluating the sustainability of concrete materials and structures. This study reports on the results of a comparative statistical analysis of regional context indicators at the prefectural level in Japan. The utility of the regional context indicators and the effect of their variability on sustainability evaluation are examined, and means for utilizing these indicators in the evaluation of concrete sustainability are demonstrated.
