Failure Behavior of RC beam with Locally Corroded Shear Reinforcement
Many research papers have been published on the effect of corrosion of both flexural and shear reinforcements on the structural performance of reinforced concrete beams. However, there is not much literature available on the effect of corrosion of only shear reinforcement (stirrup). In this study, a detailed experimental research has been conducted to observe the behavior of reinforced concrete beams with locally corroded stirrup.Twelve beams designed to show flexural failure with the dimensions of 1800 mm long, 100 mm wide, and 150 mm high were prepared, and corrosion of stirrups was accelerated electrochemically by applying direct current. The stirrup corrosion was developed in the shear span, in the middle span, or in the full span. After corrosion, corrosion cracks were checked, and a four-point load was subsequently applied. The failure modes of the beams corroded inthe shear span and the full span changed from flexural failure to shear failure, and the beams corroded in the middle span still showed flexural failure.Although stirrup in the middle span is not much responsible for flexural capacity, reduction in flexural capacity was observed because of stirrup corrosion. The increase in the amount of stirrup prevents reduction in flexural strength due to its confinement with flexural reinforcement.
