A Preliminary Study on Flexural Behaviors of Composite Beams with a Novel Post-Installed Shear Connector

Steel-concrete composite beams have been widely used in civil engineering. For traditional steel-concrete composite beam, shear headed studs were welded on the flange of the steel beam prior to insitu casting concrete slabs. With current paradigms of lowering carbon emission and improving the building efficiency in China, the connecting approach of traditional composite beams cannot meet the requirement.Consequently, to take advantage of composite action in composite beam, the efficient and practical methods for post-installed shear connectors are needed. This paper presents a new type of post-installed shear connector for composite beam. The construction method can be used to connect the steel beams to the pre-cast concrete slab efficiently. The welded shear studs were installed into the corrugated pipes which embedded in the precast concrete slab and filled with high-performance grout (HPG).Bending tests were conducted to experimentally study on the composite action of composite beam with post-installed stud shear connectors.Three specimens with three different construction methods were designed and conducted.Which including the in-situ cast stud connector type, the stud installed into corrugated pipes of precast concrete slab filled HPG type and the stud installed into in the normal prefabricated holes of precast concrete slab filled HPG type, respectively. The slip between concrete slab and steel beam were recorded and analyzed.Meanwhile, cracks development of concrete slab and composite action of concrete slab and steel beam was also experimentally studied. The experimental results show that the composite beams with CPS and RPS can exhibit desirable and stable flexural performance under monotonic loading.Meanwhile, the flexural capacity of composite beams with CPS and RPS were better than with NS.The ductility of composite beam with CPS were better than with RPS.In conclusion, it is possible to put the composite beam with post-installed shear connectors into practice.
