Experimental Study on the Bending Behavior of an Orthotropic Steel Deck with RPC Layer
An orthotropic steel deck is widely used in long-span bridges.Bridges that have been in long-term service face durability problems;i.e., weld fatigue damage and cracking of the concrete layer.Reactive powder concrete has excellent load-carry capacity and crack resistance relative to the properties of common concrete and is suitable for the layer of an orthotropic steel deck. This paper focuses on the flexible performance of the orthotropic steel deck with reactive-powder-concrete layer.Composite panel specimens were experimentally studied to quantitatively investigate the performance of the deck. The thickness of the cover layer and RPC curing methods were investigated.According to the test results of panel specimens, two beam specimens with a U-shaped steel rib were tested. The test results demonstrate the satisfactory stiffness, load-carrying capacity and crack resistance performance of reactive-powder-concrete layer. The maximum principle tensile stress on the rib-steel plate interface was 67% less than that acting on the specimen without RPC pavement.Detailed design suggestions are provided.
