Evaluation of Fire Resistance Characteristics of Tunnels in Korea by using Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS)
Because of geographical specificity of the land and the development of the construction technology in Korea, the extension and proportion of tunnels on the new highway networks has been increasing. In the last five years, traffic accidents of dangerous goods vehicles have increased as much of 10 times and explosion and fire incorporated accidents also increased.Any damages of tunnels and bridges, which are the most important infrastructures, from those unexpected events can seriously affect the road network functions. In this study, the fire resistance characteristics of tunnels were evaluated by using Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) which was originally developed by NIST, USA.The simulation variables included fire intensity and location of fire in tunnels and an additional sensitivity analysis on grid size and a total number of grid numbers in modeling was conducted.
