Numerical Investigation of Influence of Stirrups on Size Effect of RC Deep Beam
In this study, numerical simulation adopting 3D-RBSM, which is one of discrete element method to simulate concrete structures and can evaluate cacking behavior accurately, was conducted to evaluate the influence of stirrup ratio on size effect of RC deep beams based on shear resistance mechanisms and local information such as crack width and stress distribution. As the results, it was confirmed that significant size effect exist in the specimens without stirrups, resulting from the decrease of shear force carried by arch mechanism as effective depth increases. The main reason is that larger crack width occur in larger members reduces the compressive strength and shear transfer stress.Besides, for the case of specimens with stirrups, although crack width is relatively smaller as compared to the specimen without stirrups, the enlargement of crack width as increasing of beam size can still be observed, size effect of shear strength was also confirmed.
