Analysis of Deterioration Progress in RC Superstructures of Open-type Wharves by Survival Analysis

It is well known that the progress of chloride ion induced deterioration in the superstructure of open-type wharves varies widely due to many factors such as environmental conditions and the location of structural members. To reveal influence factors on the progress of deterioration helps identify critical inspection points and points where some sensors for early detection of a symptom of deterioration should be embedded in concrete. In this study, visual inspection data for the underside of the superstructure of 19 open-type wharves was used.Six influence factors were selected from the viewpoint of seawater (chloride ion) supply;1) the type of structural members (horizontal beams, vertical beams, and slabs), 2) the relative position of members in the direction parallel to the normal line of the open-type wharf, 3) the relative position of members in the direction perpendicular to the normal line of the open-type wharf, 4) the wind direction towards the open-type wharf, 5) the distance between H.W.L.and the bottom surface of structural members, and 6) the tidal difference between H.W.L.and L.W.L.The degree of influence of these factors on deterioration was analyzed by survival analysis with data form visual inspection of the underside of 19 open-type wharf superstructures. One of the results was that the deterioration of the horizontal beams, which are parallel to the normal line of the open-type wharf, and slabs was more progressive than that of the vertical beams, which are perpendicular to the normal line of the open-type wharf. In addition, influence factors for each structural member were not the same. The influence factor of horizontal beams was 3, that of vertical beams was the influence factor 5, and those of slabs were the influence factors 3 and 6.These results suggest that it is important to consider these influence factors by each structural member in order to identify critical inspection points and the points where some sensors are embedded in concrete.
