Experimental Winding of Continuous Fiber Rope at Highway Bridge Pier
Continuous Fiber Rope (CF Rope) made of Aramid fiber or Vinylon fiber has been developed to apply for the reinforcement of concrete members and structures. It is characterized by a lightweight, a high tensile strength and an excellent durability compared with reinforcing steel bar.It has also a good transportability, and it is flexible to be easily arranged at a construction site. When CF Rope is used for seismic retrofitting of an existing reinforced concrete (RC) column, it is wound around the surface of the column.Concerning an experimental application of CF Rope, only a RC column of the school building at Kanto Gakuin University in Japan was wound with Vinylon fiber rope. However, the cross section of the column was relatively small, namely 605 mm x 605 mm.When CF Rope is applied to bridge piers with a larger cross section, the experimental winding of CF Rope will be necessary. Therefore, the authors executed the experimental winding of CF Rope at a highway bridge pier as shown in Photo 1.The purpose was to investigate the winding method, the quality control, and so on.
