Circuit response characteristics of pancake-coil electromagnetic launch system based on capacitor discharge

  In order to study the response characteristics of the circuit for the pancake-coil electromagnetic launch system, a pancake-coil electromagnetic launching experiment system based on the discharge of pulsed capacitors isestablished.The experimental circuit characteristics of the capacitor and the change of mutual inductance between the intercepting plate and the launching coil have been studied through experiments.The experimental system with the crowbar circuit is exploredand tested.Based on ANSYS MAXWELL simulation, the influence of the circuit response characteristics of the pancakecoil electromagnetic launch system to the movement of the intercepting plate and the axial magnetic field distribution characteristics of the launcher is analyzed.The experimental results show that increasing the capacitor capacitance or charging voltage can both increase the discharge current peak and change rate of current.The greater the mutual inductance between the intercepting plate and the launching coil is, the larger the discharge current peak value and the rate of change are.Moreover,by observing the constant frequency of the current from the experiment with intercepting plate, it can be seen that there is no significant displacement of the intercepting plate during the discharge process.Otherwise,the influence of the crowbar circuitto the discharge characteristics is explored.When the charging voltage is 5000V, the existence of the crowbar circuit makes the discharge time of the system circuit longer,but the frequency lower.When the charging voltage is 10000V, the current flowing through the crowbar circuit oscillates, mainly due to the large resistance and the presence of junction capacitancein the crowbar circuit.The simulation results show that the circuit response characteristics of the system have a direct effect on the launching process of the pancakecoil electromagnetic launcher.The current oscillation attenuation affects the increase of the launching speed of the intercepting plate and the utilization of energy.The longer the discharge current lasts,the greater the launching speed of the intercepting plate is.The frequency of the magnetic field at one point in space is the same as the discharge currents frequency, and the magnetic field gradually decays along the axial direction.These results can provide some reference and guidance for the study of electromagnetic launch.
