Numerical simulation of multi-layer composite explosion containment vessel subjected to internal blast loading

Aluminum foam has excellent strength, while its weight is much less than matrix metal materials. And as a cellular metallic material it could be used as a defense sandwich core under blast loading.A separated inner wall composite explosion containment vessel with aluminum foam core is designed in this research. The dynamic response of composite structure is simulated using LS-DYNA software. The inner wall could slide around to compress aluminum foam core for more deformation. It is demonstrated that the total absorption energy of composite structure with separated inner wall could enhance 72% compared with the composite structure with integral inner wall under the same blast loading. Finally, the effect of inner wall pieces arrangement on the dynamic response of separated inner wall composite explosion containment vessel is explored. The result shows that more pieces arrangement will enhance the absorption energy of aluminum foam.It will be a good guidance for composite explosion containment vessel design.
