Investigations on ballistic impact property of Ti-6Al-4V based armor configurations against 12.7 mm armor piercing projectiles

In this paper, effect of target thickness, double-layering, and the order of layers on ballistic impact property of Ti-6Al-4V based armor configurations normally impacted by the 12.7 mm AP was investigated. The results showed that the increase in ballistic impact property for the monolithic Ti-6Al-4V targets is about 163 Pct when increasing the target thickness from 15 to 30 mm.The 30 mm monolithic Ti-6Al-4V target was more effective than the (15+15) mm double-layered Ti-6Al-4V targets.Since the order of layers affected the ballistic impact property of the (15+15) mm double-layered Ti-6Al-4V based configurations, the ballistic impact property was improved by about 49 Pct when the first layer was Ti-6Al-4V alloy with the RHA steel as the second layer. The differences in the ballistic impact property between various impact conditions can be related to the failure modes analyzed in the Ti-6Al-4V based armor configurations.
