TecTracer-indelible forensic marking of weapons and munitions
TecTracerTM is a novel method for forensically marking weapons, munitions and explosives.The system uses thousands of very small and thin microdots, made of nickel, bearing an alphanumeric code.They will be fixed to a weapon or munition by glue or lacquer, and can be easily found, read and identified on the spot by a simple pocket microscope or magnifier.TecTracer is designed to be a tool to facilitate official control of weapons and munitions, and to act as a deterrent to theft, by ensuring that the provenance of stolen goods can be found and proven even if other markings were tampered with, or weapons or munitions were destroyed or incinerated, hence removing the value of the illicit merchandise.The system for weapons and munitions is ready for application.Markings for explosives were experimentally recovered, pre-and post-blast, but will require more research, development and optimising before being implemented.
