Flight modeling of semi unstable supersonic mortar projectile
The aim of the Crawfish-Ammunition project is to create a supersonic ammunition for the Crawfish (RAK) self-propelled mortar. The projectile is being developed in the Military Institute of Armament Technology.Several types of shells with different shapes were tested. One of them has enormous dispersion at shooting with the highest muzzle velocity.Reasons of the incorrect flight of the projectile are investigated by the author. On the basis of data collected with a Doppler radar a high angle of total attack was detected. To explain that the CFD (Computer Fluid Dynamic) analysis was made. The author used the ANSYS FLUENT CFD code to determine aerodynamic coefficients and center of force of the projectile.Positive overturning moment at high flight velocities was observed.Instability of the projectile was pointed out as a probable cause of dispersion. To validate the results the author calculated trajectories of the most deflected flights with the use of coefficients determined in CFD analyses. The 5 degree of freedom external ballistic model was used in the calculations.Comparison of the numerical and experimental results shown good agreement and prove the reason of the dispersion.
