Roles of Bases in Flame Retardant Polymers
Base is a kind of nitrogenous substances from nature and has good thermal stability. It can release gas during combustion like melamine so they should be good candidates as gas sources of intumescent flame retardant (IFR).In addition, bases may form hydrogen bond with melamine cyanurate (MCA) because they contain amino group, carbonyl group etc.Once the hydrogen bonds between bases and MCA are formed, the nine hydrogen bonds structure between melamine and cyanurate will be destroyed. Therefore, these bases may both regulate the performance of MCA and modify the flame retardancy of MCA in PA6.In this work, bases: Adenine (A), Guanine (G), Cytosine (C) and Uracil (U) were used regulate the efficiency of IFR in polypropylene (PP) and MCA in polyamide 6 (PA6).Some positigve results were obtained.
