Investigation of the Gas Phase of DOPO Fire Retarded Polybutylene Succinate

  In this study, polybutylene succinate (PBS) was fire retarded by 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO).The effect of DOPO was evaluated by Mass Loss Calorimeter (MLC) and UL-94.In the case of the MLC scenario, it was observed that DOPO permits to delay the time to ignition (tign) from 119s to 410s and in case of the UL-94 (3.2 mm) a V-0 ranking is achieved.The investigations of the mode of action of DOPO evidence that DOPO acts in the gas phase by quenching the flame in the MLC test and by decreasing the temperature of the drops in the UL-94 test.
