The Flame Retardancy and Synergistic Effect of MCA on Polyamide
Melamine Cyanurate(MCA) is a halogen-free flame retardant commonly used in Polyamide(PA).It decomposes into melamine and cyanuric acid at 320℃, then catalyzes the degradation of PA, causes PA dripping which takes away a lot of combustion heat. The release of inert gas can dilute the oxygen concentration in the air and effectively inhibits the combustion. In this paper, we used a special surface modification for MCA and added synergist to enhance the flame retardancy and prohibit dripping, reached UL94 V0.SEM showed that MCA had a better dispersion in PA.UL94 test showed that lots of tiny bubbles in the melting matrix which probably caused the viscosity increase and prohibited dripping.TGA showed an earlier decomposing but char residue did not increase, indicated that synergist just enhanced the flame retardancy in gas phase. From Cone calorimeter tests we found the peak HRR delayed and reduced.
