Effective Flame Retardant Polyethylene with Novel Mono-Component Intumescent Flame Retardant

  A novel mono-component flame retardant methylphosphonic piperazine neopentyl glycol phosphate oligomers defined as M-IFR was synthesized and used to flame retardant polyethylene.The results revealed the samples with the thickness of 1.6 mm passed UL-94 V-0 flammability rating with the LOI value is 25.6 % when the loading amount of M-IFR was 23 wt%.The fact indicated the prepared flame retardant presented excellent flame retardant efficiency for polyethylene.The initial thermal degradation temperature of M-IFR was 223 ℃ and the char residue at 800 ℃ was 29.1%, and the flame retardant possessed excellent charring ability.The incorporation of M-IFR stimulated the thermal degradation of materials and formed a char layer on materials surface, which exerted as isolated effect and enhanced the flame retardant properties of polyethylene composites.
