Recent Advances on Flame Retardant Polylactic Acid
This presentation introduces the recent efforts on flame retardant polylactic acid (PLA) in our research group.Three methods were used to improve the flame retardant efficiency and dispersion of intumescent flame retardant (IFR) in PLA matrix: the synthesis of novel macromolecular P-N IFR (DT-M);microencapsulation of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) to prepare MCAPP and the design of new IFR formulation by using chitosan (CS) as carbon source.It is suggested that DT-M, MCAPP and APP/CS can all improve the fire resistance of PLA composites effectively.With 15%DT-M or MCAPP, the LOI values are increased to 34.6 and 28.3.For PLA/APP/CS composites, the LOI value is enhanced to 33.1 with only 7% total flame retardants loading (APP/CS=5/2).The rapid formation of intumescent char is responsible for the improved flame retardancy.The possible char forming mechanism have also been discussed.
