Fire Safety in 2018: Trends in European and American Regulations and Standardization

Major changes in fire safety regulations often take place after fire catastrophes such as the recent Grenfell Tower blaze in London with more than 60 fatalities1.This has led to reconsider the fire safety requirements for external building insulation systems in the UK.The European Commission (EC) has also addressed this problem in a project to develop a European approach to assess the fire performance of fa(c)ades. The toxicity of fire effluents from construction products is under discussion as well.In transport, more stringent fire safety requirements for buses following a series of spectacular fires in many countries are discussed again. The currently revised EN 45545 fire protection on railway vehicles standard will address higher fire safety levels. In a series of applications, fire safety is perceived to be less important compared to potential threats that may arise from the use of flame retarded products. One example is the paradox approach regarding fire tests for upholstered furniture in the USA and Great Britain.
