Synthesis of a Novel Phosphazene Derivative Flame Retardant and Its Application on Polypropylene
In this work, a phosphorous-nitrogen containing intumescent flame retardant (IFR), named six(1-oxo-2,6,7-trioxa-1-phosphabicyclo2,2,2octane-4-methyl) cyclotriphosphazene (PEPAP) was synthesized by introducing caged phosphate to cyclotriphosphazene backbone. And the PEPAP were added to polypropylene (PP) to improve the intumescent flammability and thermal properties of PP.Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1HNMR)were used to confirm the chemical structure of PEPAP.Flame retarded PEPAP/PP composites were prepared by melt blending. Also, the addition of PEPAP can dramatically improve the LOI value and UL 94 rating. The combustion properties were assessed by cone calorimeter (CONE) and it demonstrated that the PP with PEPAP generated less combustion heat and obtained better flame retardancy which can be confirmed by the decrease in the values of total heat release (THR).The results show that the addition of PEPAP enhanced the thermal stability and flame retardancy of PP significantly.
