Impact of Halogen-Free Flame Retardants with Varied Phosphoruss Chemical Surrounding on the Flame Retardancy of Epoxy Resin

  Phosphorous containing flame retardants (P-FR) are regarded as one of most promising halogen-free flame retardants for polymer materials.However, the flame-retardant efficiency is affected by the P-FR structures.This work aimed to study the effect of two series P-FRs with different phosphorus(P)chemical surroundings (phenylphosphonate-based (FPx, x=1, 2 and 3) and phenylphosphoric-based (FPOx, x=1, 2 and 3)) on the flame-retardant efficiency in epoxy resin (EP).A comparative study on the flame retardancy between flame-retardant epoxy containing the two series P-FRs was carried out via LOI, UL 94 and cone calorimeter tests.It is found that FPx(x=1, 2 and 3) showed higher efficiency than that of FPOx (x=1, 2 and 3), although they had similar chemically molecular structures.Flame-retardant mechanisms of FP 1 and FPO 1 were proposed to understand the difference in the flame-retardant efficiency.
