A Novel Multi-functional Epoxy Resin with Simultaneous Excellent Flame Retardance, Transparency and Refractive Index

  Traditional cured epoxy resin (EP) usually loses its transparency or presents low refractive index once it meets the requirement of flame retardance.To obtain the EP with simultaneous excellent transparency, flame retardancy and refractive index, a novel multi-functional polymeric curing agent named PTDP was prepared via diphenylphosphinic chloride (DPPC), thiourea and polyethylenimine (PEI) in this work.And the cured EP (PTDP-EP) material was prepared after incorporation of the PTDP into EP.The transmittance of the resulting PTDP-EP was kept at about 90% in the visible region at a loading of 30 wt% PTDP, meanwhile, its refractive index could reach to 1.574.The oxygen index (LOI) value of EP containing 30 wt% of PTDP reached 30.5%, and its sample with the thickness of only 1.6 mm passed the V-0 rating in vertical burning test (UL-94).In combustion test, both total heat release and total smoke production of the cured PTDP-EP containing 25 wt% PTDP were greatly decreased by 63.5% and 61.3% compared with the corresponding value of the reference transparent sample PEI-EP, showing excellent flame-retarding and smoke-suppressing efficiency.
