Highly Efficient Flame Retardant Polyurethane-Polyisocyanurate Foam with a Novel Phosphorus-Containing Soy Polyol and Expandable Graphite

In this work, a novel phosphorus-containing soy-based polyol (PCSO) was firstly synthesized from epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) and 2-carboxyethyl(phenyl)phosphinic acid (CEPPA).Its structure was confirmed by FTIR, 1H NMR and 31p NMR.Then, a biomass-based polyurethane-polyisocyanurate (PIR) foam was fabricated by PCSO entirely replacing petroleum-based polyether polyol. The flammability of the soy-based PIR (P-PIR) was obviously reduced by the introduction of PCSO, due to the achievement of UL-94 V-0.However, its LOI was only increased to 21.5%.A commercial alkyl phosphate polyol (BY30) and expandable graphite (EG) were used to further improve its LOI to 29.5% by addition of 15% BY30 and 10% EG.In addition, its Pk-HRR, THR and TSP were further decreased by 58%, 57% and 83%, respectively. The excellent flame retardancy of PB-PIR/EG foam was due to the synergistic effect between the gaseous phase action of PCSO and the condensed phase action of EG.
