Keratinous Fibre Based Flame Retardant With High-Performance and Low-Cost

Increasing concerns about health and safety and reinforced performance requirements have forced commercial polymeric materials to possess low flammability along with a minimum loss of their original performances.Furthermore, sustainability has become an additional requirement for the value addition. In order to meet the aforementioned performance goals simultaneously, we have suggested a new methodology to convert low-cost keratinous fibres into high-performance flame retardants.A solution-based treatment to implant amine phosphate and phosphoric acid in a keratinous fibre has been found to effectively improve the intumescent char forming ability of the fibre. After the fibre modification, the polypropylene (PP) composite has achieved a significant reduction of the polymer flammability to achieve V-O grade and >70% reduced peak heat release rate in vertical burning and cone-calorimeter tests, respectively. In addition, the mechanical properties in comparison to those of commercial flame retardant/PP composites have shown the potential of the flame retardant fibre to replace the conventional flame retardant additives.
