Smoke Suppression Properties of Polypropylene Nanocomposites with Mesoporous Fe2O3
Common Fe2O3 (c-Fe2O3) particles were fabricated by hydrothermal method in high pressure reactor, while mesoporous Fe2O3 (m-Fe2O3) particles were also produced by ultrasound mediated fabrication method using n-heptane as pore-template, FeCl3·6H2O as ferric supporter, NH3 solution as pH adjuster. The TEM picture and BJH curves illustrate that the average pole diameters of m-Fe2O3 are about 2~3nm.Pure PP, PP/and PP/m-Fe2O3 nanocomposites were made with 2wt% loading c-Fe2O3 and m-Fe2O3 respectively.Their combustion properties were characterized by cone calorimeter and the results show that m-Fe2O3 particles have better smoke suppression than c-Fe2O3 particles. That may because m-Fe2O3 particles have two effects of physical absorption and chemical catalysis reacting simultaneously during the combustion process.
