Effect of Zinc Ions on The Thermal Degradation Properties of Flame Retardant Cotton Fabrics
Layer-by-layer assembly, as a new technique, can control the composition, structure and thickness of the modified cotton fabrics at the molecular level. In this study, flame retardant cotton fabrics with different additive amount of zinc ions were prepared with chitosan, sodium phytate and zinc ions by layer-by-layer assembly. The effect of the additive amount for zinc ions on the thermal degradation properties were investigaed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA).The TGA results showed that the addition of zinc ions improved the onset degradation temperature (T5%) and the temperature at which 90% weight remained (T10%).Compared with flame retardant cotton fabrics without zinc ions, the temperatures at which the maximum weight loss rate appeared (TmaxS) of flame retardant cotton fabrics wih zinc ions were almost the same with that of flame retardant cotton fabrics without zinc ions. However, the addition of zinc ions enchanced the thermal degradation rates at Tmax (Rmax). This result indicated that the addition of zinc ions improved the thermal degradation properties of flame retardant cotton fabrics at lower temperature zone, and increased the thermal degradation at higher temperature zone.
