Synthesis of Crosslinked Cyclodextrin and its Application for Flame-Retardant Polypropylene

  Using hexamethylene diisocyanate(HDI) as crosslinking agent, a series of cyclodexdrin nanosponges(HDI-CDs) with different degree of crosslinking have been synthesized and characterized.Employing ammonium polyphosphate (APP) as acid sources and foaming agent, the PP/APP/HDI-CDs composites were prepared and show an improvement in flame retardant properties compared to PP/APP/CD.PP/APP/HDI-CD(4) shows the best in both limited oxygen index (LOI) and vertical burning(UL-94) test, which passed the V-0 rating with LOI of 32.8% under a total loading of 28 wt.%.The images of scanning electron microscope (SEM) indicate that crosslinking of CDs improved its thermal stability and increased its specific surface area which lead to a more compact carbon layer.
