Halogen-Free Intumescent Flame Retardant Steel Waterborne Coatings
Steel has been widely used in the construction industry, owing to its excellent performances. However, the flame-retardant performance of the steel is very poor.If nothing is done, the bare steel can only adhere for a few minutes under the high temperature of fire, and then it will collapse rapidly. In order to overcome this shortcoming, spraying fire retardant coating is the most ideal, most reliable and most economical method, especially using the intumescent flame retardant coating. Our group used PER, MEL and modified APP as intumescent flame retardant, and prepared vinyl acetate and butyl acrylate copolymer by emulsion polymerization, which was obtained as a resin binder for the intumescent flame retardant coatings.DSC, TGA and rheological test were measured to discuss the physical properties of the emulsion. Moreover, fire resistance of coating was analysed by the combustion test. The results indicated that, for a resin binder, different monomer and the ratio of monomer can significantly influence the expansion ratio, char thickness, carbon layer strength etc.
