Flame Retardant Properties of Polyethylene/Magnesium Hydroxide/ Polycarbosilane
Polycarbosilane (PCS) was used to enhance the flame retardancy of magnesium hydroxide (MNH) in polyethylene (PE).Limiting oxygen index (LOI) evidenced the synergistic effects between MNH and PCS by showing a high LOI value of 32 for the composites with 27 wt.% MNH and 3 wt.% PCS.Compared with PE/MNH with 50 wt.% MNH, PE/MNH/PCS with 45 wt.% MNH and 5 wt.% PCS showed 36% decreased peak heat release rate (HRR).Char residue after Cone testing was characterized by the compact ceramic layer, which contributed to the better barrier effect.
