Starch-Based Flame Retardant Coatings on Polyurethane Foam

In the past few years, laws and regulations are being strengthened as environmental awareness and safety consciousness are increasing. So far, halogen-based materials have been used, but there have been controversies regarding human health since they release toxic substances such as dioxins and furans. Therefore, in order to develop flame retardant coating with low-flammability, human-harmless and biodegradable flame retardant coating was developed by using layer-by-layer assembly on polyurethane foam with eco-friendly and cost-competitive cationic starch and anionic nano-clay.In this study, the combustion behavior of polyurethane foam was studied in terms of heat release rate (HRR), total heat release (THR) and total smoke release (TSR) were investigated. As a result, it was confirmed that the flame retardant performance of polyurethane foam treated with the flame retardant coating was improved by 47% and 71% reduction of THR and TSR, respectively, compared to the uncoated samples.
